The ultimate iPhone camera app

by filmmakers for filmmakers

MAVIS Pro Camera is a video camera for the iPhone and the first app to provide professional level filming tools including focus peaking, waveform monitor, vectorscope, false colour and zebras. It gives you audio controls, audio metering, custom resolutions and framerates - from HD to 4K, 3fps to 240fps and recordings up to 100Mbit/s. It also brings a natural interface to give you full flexible manual control while shooting.

MAVIS Camera has been designed from the ground up to pack professional production tools into your pocket. We provide the same features found in traditional pro filmmaking cameras, but optimised for the iPhone and at a fraction of the cost.

We hope you enjoy MAVIS as much as we do.

Pro Camera

With support for focus peaking and false colour we were the first to provide access to professional high quality shooting assistants on the iPhone. Since then we have continued to expand the range of MAVIS features. Take a look below and if you have any questions email us at hello@shootmavis.com

Focus

Focus peaking and expanded focus are tools to assist with focusing. The focus peaking visualisation highlights contrasted edges a bright colour to make it easier for you to determine which part of your shot is in focus. This only happens within the viewfinder so it's never seen on the recording. The expanded focus tool lets you digitally zoom in the viewfinder so you can get a closer look and make sure your focusing is spot on. Both these features are industry standard tools that are tried and trusted by professionals.

Exposure

zebras@2x.jpg

Zebras

Zebras highlight parts of the image that are over a set exposure threshold (this can be set in the settings). You can use the Zebras to make sure your shots are never over exposed.

false_colour@2x.jpg

False Colour

False colour is another way to help visualise exposure. The colours blend from blue to red to signify black to white. False colour is very helpful to see small white peaks, or to see the level of detail in the blacks.

False Colour Ranges

False Colour Ranges gives you an alternative way to view your exposure with different colours representing different ranges within the signal level. Full details about colour representations can be found within MAVIS.

Manual Shutter

Adjust the exposure by changing the ISO or shutter speed to remove the peaks and troughs. If the exposure controls don't fix it, then you'll need to look at the lighting. You can use MAVIS as a tool to help set your lighting accurately.

Shutter Angles

Set your shutter to angles and get the perfect motion blur in your shots. With our shutter lock feature you can also lock your shutter to a specific angle (e.g. 180°) whist still having control over the ISO.

waveform.png

Waveform Monitor

The waveform monitor helps you to shoot with the optimum dynamic range - you can ensure this by maintaining a good vertical spread of your waveform. White peaks and black troughs that flatten out, show over and under exposed portions of video where the dynamic range is exceeded.

Timecode

MAVIS includes both time of day and offset timecode and, because each copy of MAVIS is synced to the same remote time server, we can get near frame accurate timecode across multiple devices. This makes timecode perfect for multicam shoots, shot referencing or logging.

MAVIS timecode is embedded into each video file, which can then be read by most professional editing packages. All the packages below support MAVIS timecode.

UltraSync BLUE

With support for UltraSync BLUE, MAVIS can be paired to a super accurate external time source. Timecode System’s sync technology works across all multicamera formats, from large-scale professional cameras to DSLRs and GoPros, allowing you to keep MAVIS in sync with all your other sources. You can also connect multiple copies of MAVIS to a single UltraSync BLUE meaning all your MAVIS videos can be in perfect sync.

Pro Interface

MAVIS has been designed to be a flexible tool while shooting. The functionality has come out of the needs we have had on our own shoots, and has led to an interface that is responsive and intuitive in a fast pace environment.

MAVIS works best when using the manual controls. Both the focus and exposure controls are very fluid and easy to grab while shooting. If you are in auto, these controls instead give you a display of what the cameras focus and exposure is doing. Grabbing the focus and exposure controls immediately switches them into manual.

Menus on the left hand side give quick access to functions needed while recording - including shooting assistants, exposure and focus settings. Functions not changeable during recording are accessible in the settings menu.

DOP mode

DOP mode gives you access to all the information a DOP would want on set. Easily see your exposure levels with the waveform monitor and visualise your chrominance with the vectorscope. Use the real-time exposure, colour and focus menus to see your current setup and change any values. Finally use the larger duration/timecode display to see your exact record time and monitor your audio levels with the larger VU meter.

Fullscreen mode

Fullscreen mode gives you a maximised viewfinder while providing a great level of control. We've worked hard to ensure all the key information you need while shooting is minimal but still available. This mode provides a distraction free viewfinder so you can see exactly what you're shooting. You can also jump back into DOP mode at any point - even while you're recording.

Zoom and Dual Camera

With iPhone 7 Plus, 8 Plus and iPhone X you can now get supersharp 2x close-up videos using the optical zoom. With two 12-megapixel sensors, the iPhone is truly the best in its class offering both a wide-angle and telephoto lens. MAVIS supports both camera modules giving you the option to select which camera you want to use before you hit record.

A Tailored Experience

Global Presets

Got MAVIS in the perfect shape? Save the entire camera state as a global preset and recall it later. With the ability to save unlimited presets you can save a state for each shoot, shot, lighting condition or environment. You can recall global presets from the settings menu or assign your favourite to the FN button.

Custom Function

Small but mighty, the custom function button can be programmed to perform a single action from a wide range of options. Examples include: toggling the image stabilizer, play the last recording or activating full auto.

With over 45 options to choose from, some of which are unique to the FN button, you'll definitely find one that suits you.

Custom Interface

Go crazy with all the customisation options within MAVIS. Working in bright conditions? Then set the fullscreen controls to solid. Working in dark conditions? Then set the menus to dark mode. Fancy an animated tally? We've got your covered.

Guides

Choose from a number of preset guides including thirds, upper third and portrait safe. Alternatively create your own with a custom guides engine. This allows you to place any number of vertical and horizontal lines on the viewfinder.

Record Tally

The MAVIS tally is an animated red outline around the viewfinder that indicates when you are recording. The Tally is directly connected to the recording engine so you have an easy to see visual prompt that only shows when you are recording.

Colour

MAVIS gives you extensive control over the colour of your shots. Using the vectorscope you can precisely setup your colour without relying on your eyes (which can be affected by anything from diet to the colour of the walls).

white_balance_big@2x.png

The full-scale vectorscope shows the precise colour analysis of your scene as the camera interprets it. Set the colour of a white or grey surface to the centre of the vectorscope, and you have an accurate representation of white. Set the colour of an object to a consistent angle on the vectorscope and you can ensure you always have consistency - regardless of the white point.

colour_flyout@2x.png

The white balance can be set automatically. However this can lead to many undesirable colour casts, or the automatic removal of desired casts. You can set and lock the colour balance of three presets - and select or further edit them in real time while you are recording.

white_balance@2x.jpg

Manually adjust the Kelvin temperature to match your lighting conditions or use the 'set white balance from scene' feature before you start filming to match and lock the white balance to your environment.

Audio

Our new audio engine enables full support for internal and external audio sources. Record broadcast quality audio with an external microphone connected via either the Lightning or headphone connector.

mv88@2x.jpg

Connect a microphone via either the Lightning or headphone connector and use MAVIS to monitor and record the source. All audio sources can be monitored with the VU meter so you can make sure that your audio levels are correct and free from peaking.

manual_gain@2x.jpg

MAVIS now supports audio gain control for both internal and external mics giving you complete control over your audio. Check out the specs for full details about support.

bose@2x.jpg

Real-time audio passthrough for monitoring in headphones gives you complete control and confidence that the audio you're capturing sounds great. Monitor audio sources from the internal mics, Lightning connector and headphone connector (with compatible hardware).

Aspects and Hardware

The MAVIS viewfinder provides support for the Anamorphic Moondog Lens and Beastgrip DOF adaptor. This means the image displayed in the viewfinder can be de-squeezed or flipped, allowing you to easily frame your shots when using hardware accessories.

viewfinder_beastgrip@2x.png

Also, because we only manipulate the viewfinder, we are still able to record the real output from the camera sensor so you have access to the raw data. This is great as it allows you to have full control over the method used to de-squeeze your recordings in post production.

Record Formats

Record in resolutions up to 4K† and bitrates up to 100Mbit/sec†. Frame rates are selectable and can be stored for quick setup of standard modes.

Resolutions shot in 16:9 as offered by the iPhone camera. Resolutions in 4:3 store pure pixels. This means that the aspect ratio of the recording is based on the pixels the camera is offering. By default the viewfinder is cropped to 16:9 to help framing. With the new viewfinder you can now choose to show the 4:3 Full Frame image. Perfect if you want to see exactly what you are shooting. With the extra pixels stored you can then re-frame your 4K (UHD) productions in post.

4k@2x.jpg

Starting with the iPhone 6s/6s Plus you can capture amazing 4K (UHD) video with audio. You can also capture the maximum resolution of the sensor with 4K (4:3) at a resolution of 4032x3024.

Using the power of MAVIS you can ensure the best capture quality with bit rates of up to 100Mbit/sec and real-time visualisations, all while capturing at 4K resolutions†.

240FPS in 1080p

With iPhone X and iPhone 8/8 Plus you can record 240fps in 1080p†. This gives you amazing detail at an incredible frame rate and enables you to incorporate slow motion footage into your HD productions.

File management

Files can be stored locally in MAVIS, or can be saved to your camera roll; files in a higher resolution can only be saved locally. Local files can be accessed with iTunes, AirDrop or your favourite sharing option, and are accessed through the Settings menu. Long continuous shots are better stored locally regardless of resolution.
